MAN IN THE MIRROR!

We have all probably heard of this Micheal Jackson's song at least once. The first time I heard it was in a movie starring Keke Palmer, when she and her friends did a choral rendition of the song. The title of the movie is "Joyful Noise". It's amazing, you should watch it.

I fell in love with the song and wanted to really listen to the lyrics so I googled it. I learnt the lyrics by heart then (lol). It was that touching. I may have forgotten some of the words but the part that has stuck with me is;

I'm starting with the man in the mirror

I'm asking him to change his ways

And no message could've been any clearer

If you want to make the world a better place

Take a look at yourself and then make that change

Profound words right?

One time on my way to lectures on campus, I had a moment of epiphany. Before that time, whenever I was talking with someone, I was very particular about seeking the face of God first. But my prayer life was slowly dying then and hardly will I pray or ask someone to do so. Now as I was walking, I heard these words whispered to me "YOU CANNOT GIVE WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE". Honestly, my first reaction was “Duh, of course you cannot, it’s so obvious”. It was way later that I got the meaning of this statement.

We cannot give wise counsel if we don’t have wisdom.

If we’re always pessimistic, even in our thoughts, we cannot give hope.

What’s scary sometimes is we do not even know consciously what it is we’re giving out there.

You cannot give peace when you’re not at peace with yourself. How can you forgive others when you can’t forgive yourself of some mistakes you’ve committed in the past. When you love yourself, forgive yourself and are at peace with yourself, without much effort, that is what you give to those around you. Your conversations and actions resonate with how you are inside.

So before we go charging into the world to change things and bring world peace, maybe we should look in the mirror. And if we do that, we will realize we (individuals coming together) have the synergy to affect our world. You and I are the man in the mirror.
