Riddle me this!

For the most part, riddles are just games – they're told for fun, and to pass time. In ancient societies, they were also thought of as great tests of intelligence and cleverness, and sometimes they are still used this way. The most famous example is the Riddle of the Sphinx, from Sophocles' Oedipus the King. This was recorded in ancient Greek around the fifth century BC: “What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?” Do you know the answer?

They are an ancient form of learning and entertainment. The first discovered written riddles are close to 4,000 years old. They were written in Cuneiform, the writing of the ancient Sumerians. A shortened and simplified version of one of these earliest riddles is: “A house you enter blind, but come out with sight. What house is it?"

10. They come out at night without being called, and are lost in the day without being stolen. What are they?
