STRANGERS WITH SHARED MEMORIES

Have you ever had a friend turn into a complete stranger?

“As long as they are not your siblings or parents, you will be fine”, a passenger exclaimed as an answer to the question posed by a presenter on the radio in the commercial car I boarded from Accra to Tema.

The driver smiled and responded, “Stop making friends and make money, you will worry less. It even hurts more seeing your siblings turn into strangers”.

“God forbid”, the woman sitting next to me proclaimed. She turned to me and asked what I thought. I smiled and said, "I believe that people come into our lives at various stages to serve different purposes, and that not everyone is supposed to stick around forever."

A man once told me that after the age of 24, he resorted to replacing friends with business associates. He said, "just because you lost me as a friend does not mean that you gained me as an enemy. I still want to see you eat regardless, just not at my table."

Some people believe old friendships must end so that new bonds can be created. Others intentionally ghost their friends in order to focus on themselves. Friends have become enemies because one borrowed money and never paid back.

Life can be cruel, but life will teach you; everyone you fight is not your enemy and everyone that helps you is not your friend. Some things that your friends tell you are false and some things that your enemies tell you are true.

A “tiktoker” once said, some people are too scared to openly be your enemy so they settle for being your "fake" friend.

I say, no friends, no enemies, just strangers with shared memories.

I end this piece with three simple questions,

1.Is a fake friend really worse than an enemy?

2.Should your friend’s enemy be your enemy?

3. Who is a friend?
